Static Electricity

Do you know what's really interesting? Static electricity can be caused by different things, like dry air and heated indoor environments. When the air is dry, it can make it easier for electrons to move around and create that build-up of an electric charge we call static electricity.

There is always a percentage of moisture in the air.  As curly girls, we know that when the humidity (moisture) is high, we can end up fighting frizz!  Curly hair often thrives in a somewhat dryer climate.  Well, when the weather is very dry, the air is dryer and then it is easier for static electricity to happen. And sometimes, when we're inside our houses or buildings, the air can dry because the heat is on, making it easier for static electricity to happen. So, the next time you feel a spark when you touch someone or something, you'll know it's because of the dry weather. (Or true love!)

Static Hair Explained by Curly Life Company

Static hair

Static hair is when your hair builds an electric charge that is generated by friction and changes in temperature. The strands of your hair, once “charged”, repel each other, and make the hair frizzy and hard to style.

Adding to the elements, the lack of moisture within the atmosphere, and the heating of the indoor environment can also contribute to static hairs. Because winter air typically does not have much humidity, it can cause more static electricity, especially toward the end of the winter season.

Tell me the difference between static hair and frizz.

Do you know what's fun to learn about hair? The different types of hair! One type of hair you may have heard of is static hair. Another type of hair is frizzy hair. Do you know the difference between the two?

Static hair is the kind of hair that sticks up or sticks together when the air is dry or if you rub it against something (like pulling a hat on and off, or pulling a shirt over your head). It's caused by a build-up of electricity on the hair's surface. It can be annoying, but it's easy to fix! You can use a brush or a comb to smooth it out or spray or cream to tame it down.

Frizzy hair, on the other hand, looks rough and puffy. It can be caused by many different things, like damaged hair, humidity, or using the wrong type of hair products. Frizzy hair can be harder to fix, with solutions that include products and techniques combined.  A solution to try is using moisturizing hair products followed by products that provide hold and “seal” the moisture in, creating a barrier to humidity.

So, remember, static hair is caused by dry air, and it's easy to fix; while many things can cause frizzy hair, it's essential to find the right products and techniques to tame it.

Brittle hair

Do you know what's important for healthy hair? Taking care of it! One of the things that can happen when we don't take care of our hair is that it can become brittle. Brittle hair breaks easily and is hard to style. Do you know what can cause this?  Chemicals and hot tools.  The chemicals and heat can each damage the hair and make it brittle.

Avoid or limit the use of hot tools, like flat irons or curling wands. Heat styling tools can damage the hair and make it brittle. To keep your hair healthy, it's important to avoid using these hot tools too much.  If you must, you can use heat-protectant products before styling your hair with heat tools.

And remember, if your hair is brittle, also be careful with non-electric metal styling tools, metal clips, metal barrettes and rubber bands.  All very hard on brittle hair.

Chemicals…such as permanents or color treatments.  Oh No!  The majority of women will at some point in their curly lives decide they need some highlights, or root touch ups, or a brand new color altogether.  This can be hard on your hair, so it is important to choose hair products that are safe for color treated or chemically processed hair, so that you pamper your hair with your day-to-day care.  (PLEASE don’t chemically straighten your hair.  I did this in high school- plus I added the insult of Sun-In.  It wasn’t pretty).

Winter Means Hats: How can I tame static hat hair

Hats are a key wardrobe accessory for winter because of the cold, but they can leave your hair dry! When we wear hats, especially knit hats, our hair can get a little bit staticky when we take them off.  Do you know why that happens? It's because the hat can rub against our hair and make our hair's electrons move around, creating static electricity!  In fact, it’s the perfect environment for static electricity.

But don't worry! There are ways to tame static hat hair. One way is to use a leave-in conditioner or a styling cream before putting on your hat. This can help to keep your hair smooth and calm.

Another way is to dampen your hair before putting on your hat. Wet hair is less likely to create static. And when you take off your hat, you can use a wide-toothed comb to comb out your hair gently, or you can use a styling product specifically designed for static hair.

Tips from celebrity hairstylist "Oscar Blandi":

"Very simply put, static flyaways happen when the hair or the environment around the hair is dry, so moisture is the answer," explains NYC salon owner Oscar Blandi. Try adding an extra weekly deep-conditioning treatment to your usual hair care routine. "Conditioning products help hair retain moisture and keep strands weighed down--in a good way--which is the best way to fight static."

So remember, conditioner is your friend during the winter months. You can use a leave-in conditioner, mist your hair, or a styling product for static hair. And don't forget to be gentle when combing or brushing your hair after taking off your hat.

5 tips for taming staticky dry hair

Staticky hair can be a real nuisance. It's often static-prone, challenging to style and manage, and can lack the shine and luster that healthy hair has. Many people turn to curly hair products during the winter months.

Curly hair products leave your hair moisturized, which is what your hair needs in the winter months. Here are five simple tips for taming dry hair to look your best.

Use a dryer sheet

You probably already have this solution in your house!  Dryer sheets are designed to calm down the electrons that cause static electricity. When you use a dryer sheet on your hair, it can help to make your hair less staticky and more smooth. They now also make anti-static sheets specially designed to reduce static in your hair.

You can use an anti-static sheet by gently rubbing it over your hair to tame your hair. You can use it on both dry and damp hair. You can also keep a dryer sheet in your pocket, in your purse, or in your backpack, and when you feel your hair getting static, you can smooth it over your hair.

So, remember, anti-static sheets can be a helpful way to tame hair static during winter or dry weather.

Use a moisturizing shampoo

Curly hair tends to be naturally drier than straight hair, which makes it more prone to static electricity. Moisturizing shampoos can be beneficial for curly hair as they add hydration to the hair shaft, making it less likely to become staticky.

Using shampoo and conditioner that add back moisture is a great way to keep any hair type looking bouncy and frizz-free by adding the necessary hydration to the hair, making it less prone to static.

Never forget to use a conditioner

A conditioner can help to add moisture back into the hair, making it less likely to become staticky. So, if you're struggling with staticky hair, try using a good quality conditioner after shampooing and see the difference it makes. The right conditioner can be your secret weapon in keeping your hair smooth, shiny, and static-free.  Use a conditioner with good slip, so you can easily detangle completely while wet with conditioner.  The less you manipulate your hair as it dries and is dry, the less chance of static! (this is true for frizz as well)

Use Natural Fiber as a Towel

Natural fibers like cotton, linen, and bamboo are more absorbent than synthetic fibers, and can help absorb excess water from your hair more effectively.

By absorbing excess water from your hair, a natural fiber towel can help to reduce the amount of water in your hair without excess friction and therefore reduce the potential for static. Unlike synthetic fibers, natural fabrics are less likely to cause friction on the hair.

Friction between hair strands can cause the hair to become more staticky. So, using a natural fiber towel can help to minimize friction and help prevent static hair.

Apply a leave-in cream or conditioner on the go

Leave-in creams or conditioners can help to prevent static hair in a few different ways. As mentioned before, dry hair is more prone to static electricity because it lacks moisture that helps to keep the hair shaft smooth and prevent friction.

Leave-in creams or conditioners help moisturize the hair and can also help detangle and smooth the hair, which can help reduce static. When hair is tangled, it can rub against itself and other surfaces, causing friction and static. By keeping the hair smooth and detangled, a leave-in cream or conditioner can help to reduce the potential for static.
